Arm Chairs in the Kitchen
I’ve got a vision. Actually, Vector had the vision but I translated. And he’s a cat..what does he care if I take credit for his ideas! So, I had this idea to put a comfy chair in my kitchen. I do own beautiful Bar Stools and have placed them at the dining table, but a nice and comfy chair in the kitchen isn’t a bad idea. A place to rest while the cookies are baking or a place to curl up with a book while watching the comings and goings of the kitchen.
I put this chair at the foot of the stairs.
Vector loves sitting there. LOVES IT!

I put the freshly washed pink blanket on the chair to go upstairs and he liked it even more. It’s right on top of the heater vent and is a nice cozy corner. I’ve decided I need a nice comfy arm chair at that very spot. I’d like something small like this little chair I reupholstered.
Here’s a before and after:

I would use this chair but it is white and I’m a little attached to it. I may just suck it up and use it but in an ideal world, I think the spot needs a vintage or retro pink pattern.
Here are some other chairs I was looking at. It’s really hard to find comfy chairs in the smaller proportions that the space needs.
What do you think? Should I use the white chair or keep looking? I’ve already given it one coat of scotch guard. Maybe I’ll give it a second coat and stop worrying.

My Parent’s Kitchen
My parents just moved from a suburban house on the south side of Houston to a more rural area north of Houston. I haven’t seen the new place but I’m excited to see what my mom does with it. The first big task was to re-do the kitchen cabinets.
You can see there is an awkward peninsula with upper cabinets that close off the space. There is also a wall oven and a range instead of a single stove unit. The oven was one of the few things that impressed me, and I vowed to read some countertop convection oven reviews when I got back home. All the appliances are white and dated. There is also the awkward boxed-in area above the cabinets. Here’s a slightly different angle and the awkward blocking cabinets are out and you can see things better. Looks worlds better already!
Here is the “after/during” There still aren’t counters but you can see where it’s going. The cabinets are the flat-packed variety from online and my Mother put them together. I think they look great! A great budget option were some cardboard and plastic baler machines for quick clean ups.
The new cabinets go all the way to the ceiling opening up the room. The plan is to use the Ikea Beech countertops just like mine. Finding quality bar coolers for sale requires a little research on your end They are mostly installed already:
Here’s a fuzzy picture my mom texted me:

Huge upgrade from what was there! I can’t wait to see it in person. I’ll have to do a house tour when I visit!

Globe-Shade Chandelier
I’ve been at a loss about what to do regarding the lighting situation in the dining room, Piano room, and entry.
I just saw this posted to Pinterest by my new blog bff that I’ve never met, Victoria Elizabeth Barnes and I’m in LOVE.

I don’t know the original source of the image but if you have any ideas, let me know.
Obviously this chandelier is waaay too big for any of the spaces I’m thinking of. My entry is grand and pretty but not that grand. I love the globes though. It’s got a kind of “look what we can do with electricity…closed lights” look to it which I love.
It’s different but still period. AND, the best part is I can get any simple chandelier and add the globes to it for $5 each from home depot!
I’ve started a collection of chandeliers that I’m thinking over. Some of these would be great with a globe upgrade. Others would do just fine on their own.
Click on the images to go to the sellers website and support the blog in the process.
What do you think? Any that stand out to you? I’m really loving this globe option. It takes the stress off finding a super awesome chandelier at a good price. I can get a plan, simple, builder’s grade chandelier and make it look awesome with an inexpensive tweak!

Master Closet & Laundry – Getting close!
Last summer, I developed a detailed plan for the master closet/laundry. See the post here:
Master Closet and Laundry Design July 3, 2012sv
I really like the design and I’m even more convinced of its utility. The idea is to put raised front-loading washer/dryer in the corner of the room and use 3 Ikea Expedit shelves as the bones of the shelving units.
The wall with the window and the laundry units would be situated like this:
with the adjacent wall looking something like this:
Now that drywall is getting close, it’s time for me to start thinking about the details of the space. For instance, the ends of the purple clothes rods in the above picture. Should I have a vertical piece of lumber to frame in the space? Or should I have a clothes rod bracket that just free-floats?
