Weekend Update – Sept 15&16 – Shed Raising
My sister and brother in law were in town this weekend. It was super fun.
They arrived on Thursday. Thursday evening we grilled and chatted and relaxed. Friday they had business is town so Stefan and I worked. Friday evening, they were still out and about and Stefan and I went to Arlington Town Night and saw the fireworks. It was so small-town-y and cute. This will be a great place to have kids one day.

Saturday, the real fun began. The four of us worked all morning on getting the shed put together. By noon we had most of 4 walls up. That shed took forever!

My brilliant and beautiful sister was in charge of the directions.

It was so much fun to work on such a good project with my sister and brother-in-law.

We took a quick walk through Town Day and basked in the cuteness of a town fair and the beautiful weather.
Saturday Afternoon Bekah and Bryson had plans so Stefan and I Continued to work on the shed. So many little screws! No really, hundreds of screws!
Sunday, more shed. Bekah and I also planted 100+ bulbs. I can’t wait to see them all pop out of the ground next spring! I still have more to plant but I haven’t figured out where I want them. We are stalling on lanscaping the front yard because it looks like we’re going to have to dig out the drain pipe to the street. It’s never ending!
We took a trip to HD on Sunday and got 2 Dwarf Albera Spruces for the front of the shed. Bekah and I planted them, bricked in beds, mulched, etc and they look great!

We also spread tons of grass seed. We have got to water EVERY DAY which is a chore I don’t relish. Once we get the sprinkler set up, it should just be a matter of turning it on and off. I just have to remember to do it.
The yard is really shaping up. We have had a re-occuring visitor to the vegetable garden. This cute cardinal must have a lady friend with a nest in our backyard. Every time I look out the window I see him.
We need to call a scrap metal guy, move some more stuff into the basement, set up shelves in the shed, and we’ll be good to go!
I need to get some sort of organization system into place in the shed. I’m thinking these shelves from ikea are just about perfect:

and for $15, you can’t go wrong. I’d also like to get some wire bins to store gardening stuff in on the shelves. It’s so dark in that shed, I’m going to want to be able to grab a tub of stuff and bring it out into the light to find what I’m looking for.
I think we also need some sort of solar light for inside the shed. I was thinking something motion detecting so it’ll come on when you open the doors to the shed. This one from Northern Tool looks promising for $39. We should see about getting one of these to just stick up to illuminate the driveway while we’re working on the electric. Another couple weeks and we’ll be getting home in complete darkness!
In addition to shed-raising, Sunday was my birthday and we celebrated in style.

Yes, that is funfetti cake with rainbow chip icing. And yes..I am a grownup and it’s my turn to define what that means…

Monday I went to work and Bekah and Bryson entertained themselves at home. Bekah had some work to do online and Bryson went to work on a list we left him. Seriously, Stefan and I have amazing families. How often can you have company and leave them for a day and come home to lots of projects done? Bryson put the finishing touches on the shed in addition to building us some sweet rain diverters.

He also assembled an ikea desk for us which has already been put to good use.

After a good long weekend, they headed back to Austin and we got back to our normal routine.

Weekend Update – Sept 8 & 9 – Concrete Pad and Cleaning Up
It was a beautiful weekend. Saturday was clear but humid ending with a bout of rain. Sunday was cool and refreshing. It was just the kind of weather where you just want to cuddle with a kitty and I had just the kitty for cuddling.
To start out the weekend, I attended a wonderful craft night with a couple friends. We are at various stages of mastering the art of our crochet.
Emily is the seasoned expert. Meredith is the explorer never satisfied with one stitch or one project. Karen is the enterprising beginner whose scarf managed to turn from “what is that?!” to the beginnings of a cuddly scarf. I guess that leaves me, triple crocheting a huge afghan and loving the repetition and lack of thought it requires.

Emily is working on a cute little koala. I love koalaa. I hope she finishes it. I’m sure it will be adorable.
I’ve been working on an afghan since last November. When I was planning the wedding, I couldn’t keep my hands still and this was my way of relaxing. I’m even busier now but I’ve learned to cherish the time I get to just sit and do nothing so I haven’t worked on it as much lately. Perhaps this winter when I need a blanket to cuddle up with I’ll be more motivated. I’ll share the final product when it is complete!
Saturday morning was the start of Operation Concrete Pour. I’m afraid I was a bad blogger and didn’t take any pictures of the process. I was too busy moving 2 TONS of concrete around. We rented a concrete buggy

Here is a nice diagram from a concrete place in California. Notice the man is standing around and the woman is raking concrete around. Yep, that was me. Though Stefan wasn’t just hanging out, he was inside the trailer pushing the concrete out the drain of the trailer. Keep in mind, it was a warm day though not the warmest we’ve had. It’s about a 20 min drive from the concrete place to our house and the concrete sets in about an hour. Not only are we working hard, we’ve got a time crunch. Another problem to note with this diagram, they are standing in the wet concrete. It wouldn’t be so bad if you could do that! It’s the stretching as far as possible so you can get to the pile of wet concrete that makes is back-breaking labor. We had to get the trailer back by noon so by 11:30, Stefan was driving back to Woburn Concrete to return the trailer. I, on the other hand, was tasked with smoothing the concrete. We were going for a brush finish which is the textured finish they use on sidewalks. It’s easier to do than the super smooth finish. To even out the concrete, I used a piece of wood, an old sponge mop, and the back of a square edge shovel. To finish it off, I used a broom to give it a nice texture.
About an hour later and voila:

After lunch, we realized we should have done some concrete decorating. So we added some personality to the slab. Can you tell which part I did?

Lessons learned about pouring and working with concrete:
- Hire professional help from the asphalt repair agency
- Backing up with a trailer is hard, work out your directing signals ahead of time
- Don’t be afraid to add a little water to make it behave. The pros may scoff but a slightly less structural pad that’s on the pad is much better than a pad still in the concrete trailer
- A yard of concrete is just on the high end of what you want to move yourself. Any more and you should have the big truck deliver.
- Getting a smooth, flat finish is hard. For the shed it’s no big deal but for a garage, I think I’d hire it out, but I would have professionals like Residential New Garage Door Installation Dallas TX take care of that.
- Don’t even thing about this project without two strong people, a pitchfork, a square-edge shovel, and a bow rake.
- Make your handprints/declarations of love/date marks/etc. while the concrete is still wet. If it’s only semi-wet, use little dots to make letters instead of pulling lines through the concrete
After that ordeal, we slept. No really, we took about a 2 hour nap on Saturday. It was glorious. It was after the nap that we decided it was time to do laundry. Enter adventure number 2 of the weekend. The dryer went out on us! The clothes weren’t drying and I had 2 full loads of wet laundry and it’s pouring outside. So, we covered the kitchen in clothes and Stefan went to work fixing the dryer.
After taking it apart and trying to determing if the blower fan was broken or what, he came across a clump…a clump of lint…a clump of lint the size of a basketball. Turns out the previous owners weren’t so good at cleaning the lint trap. Honestly, I’ve never been so happy to see a lint ball in my life. We cleaned that sucker out, put the dryer back together, and voila: dryer like new! Sunday I did 8 loads of laundry. All the sheets, blankets, all the stuff from the apartment that our subletters used. SO MUCH LAUNDRY! I must say, it was an amazingly satisfying day.
In between loads of laundry, Stefan convinced me we absolutely had to clean the bedroom. I was unconvinced. He said I’d feel better. Man was he right!

It doesn’t look amazing or well decorated but it’s clean and functional. We actually assembled the bed which had been propped against the wall for oh, 6 months. We put all the clothes away, hung up every shirt draped over anything in the room, vacuumed(!) and even put the new comforter on the bed. I haven’t slept so well in well 6 months! I get clostophobic from time to time and it had been happening to me more often recently. Stefan took it upon himself to force us to clean up the bedroom for my sanity. I couldn’t be more thankful that he did. I have a better outlook on life just knowing the bedroom floor is picked up. I may just turn into a neat freak if this keeps up!
The weekend can’t be all fun and games and cleaning. Although I was hoping to jump in the pool for a bit, we got a new dart sets to play while we enjoy our time outside. But first we had to finish our work (hah!). We finished sistering beams in the bathroom floor. Now we are ready to start drilling holes for the various wires. We also need to button up some plumbing and do a bit of floor-leveling in the 1/2 bath. It looks good and I’m excited to start checking things off the “Before the Bathroom Floor Goes Down” list.

Vector was once again a good helper for his daddy.

We’ve got a busy few weeks coming up but I’m hoping to have the bathroom floors down by the end of October. That gives us 7 weekends less 2 busy weekend. 5 working weekends to get that floor down. I think that’s do-able. That will give us 5 more working weekends to get things buttoned up for drywall. That even leaves 3 weeks in December to try to schedule blow-in insulation!
Have a good week!

Weekend Update – Labor day Weekend Sept 1,2,&3
We did a bit of yard work this weekend. The big tasks were to get the frame for the concrete pad built, to get the dumpster situtated so it could be hauled off this week, and clean up some brush and trees.
You can see the before and after here. The first photo was taken May 14 and the second Sept 2. The photos don’t do the change justice. It really opened up the yard and the space feels huge. Once we get the shed in and get the big blue tarps out of the yard, we will really have a huge, clean, maintained backyard!

In addition to building the frame, we took down a small tree that was unfortunately situated right in front of where the door to the shed will be. We also pruned and shaped the giant Yew to the right of the shed pad. We had 3 trashcans and 7 bundles of yard waste this week! Tons of work.
I also spent some time pruning the cherry tree. The bows were touching the ground and started turning yellow and brown. It looks much better cut a little higher.

I also spent some time taking pictures of flowers and veggies (and insects) in the backyard.

It’s hard to see in this picture but we also did a bunch of work inside as well. We needed to level the bathroom floor. We accomplished this by blistering 2×6 beams next to the existing beams and bringing them up to level. We used two 4ft levels, a level line, a generously loaned pneumatic framing nailer, and tons of structural screws. We have 6 more boards to do and the half-bath also needs to be leveled. Not too shabby for a days work and we definately needed to do that before we started drilling holes for electric or anything. Next weekend will be all about getting that floor situated with the appropriate electrical, plumbing, Ethernet, etc that needs to run under the floor, we are currently looking for an electrical repair in marietta ga team.
We are also planning on having the concrete pad poured for the shed next weekend. I also have a meeting with a DAR chapter regarding my application. For those of you who don’t know, DAR or Daughters of the American Revolution is a charitable organization for those who can trace their lineage to a soldier in the American Revolution. My patriot is Beriah Bliss. My mother was a member when she was my age and my great grandmother was also a member. It’s a bit of an elite hoity-toity group but they do good work and they are basically an organization devoted to history, patriotism, and charity. Those are 3 things I can get behind.
The weekend after next, my sister and brother-in-law are coming into town! They are going to help us assemble the shed. I’m also planning on some electrical/plumbing work and some porch painting. It would be great if we could get the back deck sealed while they are here. That will mostly depend on the weather I suppose.
Well, that’s the update. We are at a point in the house work where the work is not very photogenic. We are getting behind-the-scenes work done so that we can do all the finishing before and after type stuff later. That’s when the pictures will start getting more exciting!
Have a good short-week!

Weekend Update – Aug. 4/5 and 11/12
The kitchen is taking a bit longer than expected to finish. I can’t wait to show the final pictures but alas, there are no final pictures to show.
Aug 4/5 we spent a bunch of time getting the apartment cleaned out. We still have a TON of stuff over there but we had a new sub-letter coming in and he didn’t need the room furnished so we had to move all the furniture out. It wasn’t raining as is typical of moving days but it was perhaps the hottest day of the summer. After loading up the truck and the Honda fit to the brim, we were drenched in sweat and ready to rest a bit. The goal for the kitchen was to get the sink installed. That task had a couple pre-requisites.
First, we had to get the vertical piece next to the fridge installed:

And we needed to get the drain re-done. We did figure out how to hook in the sink drain to the vent stack. That really helps the sink drain much faster. If you’re unfamiliar with plumbing drains, as I was about 6 months ago, the vent basically lets the “bubble” of air out of the drain. There is a column of air between the water in the sewer and the water in the sink. This can be especially seen if you fill a sink and then pull the drain plug. Poorly vented sinks will stay full until enough agitation occurs to let the big air “bubble” bubble up through the water in the sink basin so that the water can drain. The vent is a branch off the main trunk of the drain that lets that air escape so the sink can drain without issue.
Before we could move onto the sink, we needed to get the counter placed and the hole for the sink cut. We also needed the corner piece of countertop cut and installed before we sealed everything up since the seam between the two sections of counter was right under the lip of the sink.
Here is Stefan cutting the big sink hole.

Getting that corner piece cut was no small feat. We finally settled on making a cardboard template which worked out well but ended up taking approximately forever.
Between Saturday of Moving and a super fun brunch on Sunday along with the life sucking heat and lack of adequate insulation to help the AC keep the house cool, we didn’t get much done.
By the next weekend, Aug 11/12, we managed to have the corner piece cut and installed. Whoohoo. Yay for those couple hours of free/work time after work.

Friday evening, we got the sink set into it’s hole. Whoo, it looks so good! By Saturday we had it plumbed and running. This weekend was Massachusetts tax free weekend so we went on a marathon 3 hour, $700 trip to Home Depot.
On Sunday, we cut a hole for the vent hood and spent most of Sunday which was an absolutely beautiful day working on the yard which was in desperate need of some tlc. Stefan mowed which was quite a chore since it had been more than 5 weeks and every pass with the lawn mower had to be done 2 or 3 times to get the long grass cut. We also spread some grass seed and took out 3 full trashcans of yard waste. I still have a lot of weeding to do but I figure if I can keep the weeds from flowering this year, the weeding can wait until things are a little less crazy.
My wonderful parents are coming in tomorrow(!!) for a long weekend of working on the house. I will be diligent in photographing the progress.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you! The porch guys started on the posts and railings last week. It looks amazing!
I’ll keep you post-ed! hehe
