This Coreopsis is sprouting.

I’ve planted some pansies out front.

I love spring. It’s been a long, cold, lonely winter and seeing the bulbs pop up has been great fun.

Brick Garden Path: Part 1

In about 2 hours I dug up and moved about 6 wheelbarrows full of dirt.

IMG_5126.JPG

After digging the dirt, I installed some cheap plastic landscape edging…we’ll see if It was worth it. Part of me is just annoyed by it.

IMG_5130.JPG

Next was the gravel. 250lb worth.

IMG_5134.JPG

I’m sore as can be but excited about the finished product! I’m planning on herringbone!  I love herringbone!

IMG_5136.JPG

I’m hoping to get the next layer, sand, pored and get at least a decent start on laying the bricks before the week is up. As always, I’ll keep you posted!

Making Pasta by Hand

Stefan and I went to a friend’s house recently for a pasta dinner, make your own pasta. It was super fun. We had a pasta press but had to cut the noodles by hand. I decided to try it again and I found some simple instructions over at thepioneerwoman.com. I have to say this would be a great cooking project with kids. Kids love pasta and this is a fun and easy project that cooks up fast.

2 eggs, 1 cup flour

Mix, Kneed, and roll. I just kneeded it in my hand like I was playing with playdough. It was about that consistency and since I just made enough for 2 people, it was nice and easy to kneed. If I was making a big batch, I’d use my kitchenaid.

IMG_4971.JPG

I cut it using a nice kitchen knife and just accepted that I would have shorter noodles.

The meatballs were stewing while I made the pasta.
IMG_4973.JPG

They turned out super well. 1 28oz can crushed tomatoes and a little water for the sauce and 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, and 1 lb ground beef for the meatballs. I seasoned the sauce with oregano, thyme, and basil while the meatballs cooked in it.

After I cut the pasta, I had a nice mound of it, perfect for 2 people. Way more meatballs than pasta but they are great for leftovers.

Boil some salted water, cook for 2-3 min, and voila. It didn’t take long at all and was definitely a tasty meal. If I had a cool pasta maker, I think I’d make this all the time. This one is only $30 and looks like it would do the trick.

Once I get my walk-in pantry, I’ll have room for more cooking toys!

Try pasta tonight. It’s not as hard as it seems and was mighty tasty!

Houseplant Update

Lots of changes to the houseplants since the last time I posted. These pictures are a little old but they should give you an idea of how things progressed over the minnesota winters with severe conditions that include strong winds and several feet of snow.

My Christmas Cactus finally bloomed!

IMG_5056.JPG

It’s gotten pretty big.

IMG_5057.JPG

IMG_5058.JPG

The succulents are doing great as well.

IMG_5052.JPG

This guy isn’t as big as it once was but it seems to be recovering alright.

IMG_5048.JPG

And the bowl of succulents is looking good

IMG_5049.JPG

This one even looks like it might bloom soon.

IMG_5051.JPG

I got this little guy from Stefan for valentines day. He’s looking good. I need a new pot for him. I’m keeping my eyes peeled for more milkglass planters.

IMG_5047.JPG

And this one is too tall for the shelf and should probably be split or re-potted soon.

IMG_5046.JPG

As for my baby, the Meyer Lemon, I’ve got lemons!

IMG_5053.JPG

He grew a bunch this winter. I think he really likes being full in this sunny window. There is one long branch that may need to be pruned but tying everything to a stake seems to have really helped him maintain his shape, I also add some Ornamental plants to add some decoration to the room. I can’t wait to see if those lemons reach full size!

IMG_5054.JPG

Another few weeks and it will be time to move the Meyer lemon outside. Having fun houseplants is great! I keep thinking about getting another dwarf citrus tree but I just don’t have enough sunny windowspace! Perhaps once the 3rd floor is ready for plantlife. Then if you’re looking for other nice options for your garden have you ever considered buying fruit trees? They can look great and provide you with fresh fruit so are one of our top recommendations. I actually love them a lot, it helps me eat a lot healthier.

Are there any must-have houseplants that I’m missing out on? I think we need a good sized palm in the den to give the space a little life but that will come once the Den is more settled. Anything else?
