Building a Boat in the Basement… or a Bed in the Bedroom
Let me start by giving you a hint:
Ah yes, second floor window..measuring tape…we must be trying to get something big into the second floor. Notice that the window is not only gone but so is the window-frame. Yes, we were that tight.
See, that’s the bed and that’s the bedroom window:

We set up a pair of ladders and a drop-cloth to prevent scratches.
And up she goes:
We went through the house and up the stairs to the bedroom. Take a look from the top:

Scary! Stefan hopped out the window and maneuvered the bed. I was inside to guide it through the window and grab it.

No pictures of the actual window moving (my hands were full) but with some careful handling, we got both the head-board and foot-board in through the window. Hurrah!
We were, of course, left with a big hole in the office nook in the bedroom.
But we installed a new window and are working on patching the plaster as we speak. I’ll show you the after photos once it’s well, after.
Yay bed!

P.S. Poor Vector had to be locked in his room during this ordeal. He loves to get out onto that roof and we can never get him back in! So, no Vector photo-bombs this post but I did swing by an estate sale on Saturday and pick up this awesome butcher block to use as a Kitchen Island. And, of course, Vector promptly claimed this seat.
Afternoon at the Zoo and KOALAS!
Last Friday Stefan took off the afternoon and we went to the Stoneham Zoo. They have koalas for the summer and I LOVE koalas so it had been on my list all summer.
It was a beautiful day though the zoo was a bit of a disappointment. The koalas were awesome but their cages were kind of dirty and there was this horrible carpet in the viewing area that smelled terrible. Still, KOALAS!
and here we are with a koala in the background! Goofy picture but we’re 25 and went to the zoo…goofy is the name of the game.
In addition to the Koalas: Totally awesome Snow Leaopard:

All-in-all, great to do once, not sure I’d go back or really recommend it but with the Koalas, I’m glad we went.
It was a great fun outing to kick off the weekend.

Tiling the Bathroom Walls
Yesterday I told you about the new bathroom doors. The door and trim had to be installed before I could finish laying the tile in the bathroom. Well, this week I finished the tile.
And grouted it!
AND tiled and grouted the bathroom floor!
I’m still waiting on some window trim before I can finish up the wall behind the toilet.
But while I’m waiting, I have the whole shower to do. It’ll be a big effort to get that finished up but once it’s done, I can have someone out to measure for a shower enclosure. We’re getting so close to having a real bathroom! Eeek!

It looks super. What an accomplishment. The end is in site.
Doors and other news
We picked up 2 doors from Home Depot last weekend. One is super big, super heavy, and not installed and the other was lighter, smaller, and already installed. Yayy door.
This is the double door from the closet into the bathroom. It looks AWESOME. It still needs to be painted but solid-core doors are great. The guy at Home Depot looked at us crazy for paying the extra $60 or whatever for solid core but we are trying to keep the laundry noise to a minimum. They also feel nicer. Trust me, doors can feel nice. It’s like expensive shoes. They just feel better.
Stefan made sure the doors were dead level, as usual.
The doors haven’t been painted, the trim has only been installed on the bathroom side, and we still need a floor transition but the doors make the space feel more finished even if it’s just a step along the way.
In other news, I was laid off from work last week. Bummer but on the plus side, I’m getting so much done on the house! I know I’ve been AWOL for a while but I’ve been working on developing a plan. I’ve got a draft of a resume, a draft of a cover letter, and only a vague notion of what I want to do with my life. It’s been a week of tile work and soul searching. I think I’ve decided to transition from a technical hardware engineering position to a Project/Program Management position. It’s going to be an interesting change but I’m ready for something new. If any of you blog-people know of an PM positions in Boston, let me know!
Now that you know the whole story, you can be expecting much more house activity in the near future. Already this week I’ve tiled the shower floor, finished tiling the bathroom walls except for one little spot, and grouted the whole thing. Tomorrow I’m planning on sharing my bathroom progress so far as well as tiling the majority of the shower!

Can’t wait to see pictures of all the tiling work. I love the pink closet. You will be so glad you painted it when it is full of clothes and laundry stuff.
