Weekend Update – Sept 8 & 9 – Concrete Pad and Cleaning Up
It was a beautiful weekend. Saturday was clear but humid ending with a bout of rain. Sunday was cool and refreshing. It was just the kind of weather where you just want to cuddle with a kitty and I had just the kitty for cuddling.
To start out the weekend, I attended a wonderful craft night with a couple friends. We are at various stages of mastering the art of our crochet.
Emily is the seasoned expert. Meredith is the explorer never satisfied with one stitch or one project. Karen is the enterprising beginner whose scarf managed to turn from “what is that?!” to the beginnings of a cuddly scarf. I guess that leaves me, triple crocheting a huge afghan and loving the repetition and lack of thought it requires.

Emily is working on a cute little koala. I love koalaa. I hope she finishes it. I’m sure it will be adorable.
I’ve been working on an afghan since last November. When I was planning the wedding, I couldn’t keep my hands still and this was my way of relaxing. I’m even busier now but I’ve learned to cherish the time I get to just sit and do nothing so I haven’t worked on it as much lately. Perhaps this winter when I need a blanket to cuddle up with I’ll be more motivated. I’ll share the final product when it is complete!
Saturday morning was the start of Operation Concrete Pour. I’m afraid I was a bad blogger and didn’t take any pictures of the process. I was too busy moving 2 TONS of concrete around. We rented a concrete buggy

Here is a nice diagram from a concrete place in California. Notice the man is standing around and the woman is raking concrete around. Yep, that was me. Though Stefan wasn’t just hanging out, he was inside the trailer pushing the concrete out the drain of the trailer. Keep in mind, it was a warm day though not the warmest we’ve had. It’s about a 20 min drive from the concrete place to our house and the concrete sets in about an hour. Not only are we working hard, we’ve got a time crunch. Another problem to note with this diagram, they are standing in the wet concrete. It wouldn’t be so bad if you could do that! It’s the stretching as far as possible so you can get to the pile of wet concrete that makes is back-breaking labor. We had to get the trailer back by noon so by 11:30, Stefan was driving back to Woburn Concrete to return the trailer. I, on the other hand, was tasked with smoothing the concrete. We were going for a brush finish which is the textured finish they use on sidewalks. It’s easier to do than the super smooth finish. To even out the concrete, I used a piece of wood, an old sponge mop, and the back of a square edge shovel. To finish it off, I used a broom to give it a nice texture.
About an hour later and voila:

After lunch, we realized we should have done some concrete decorating. So we added some personality to the slab. Can you tell which part I did?

Lessons learned about pouring and working with concrete:
- Hire professional help from the asphalt repair agency
- Backing up with a trailer is hard, work out your directing signals ahead of time
- Don’t be afraid to add a little water to make it behave. The pros may scoff but a slightly less structural pad that’s on the pad is much better than a pad still in the concrete trailer
- A yard of concrete is just on the high end of what you want to move yourself. Any more and you should have the big truck deliver.
- Getting a smooth, flat finish is hard. For the shed it’s no big deal but for a garage, I think I’d hire it out, but I would have professionals like Residential New Garage Door Installation Dallas TX take care of that.
- Don’t even thing about this project without two strong people, a pitchfork, a square-edge shovel, and a bow rake.
- Make your handprints/declarations of love/date marks/etc. while the concrete is still wet. If it’s only semi-wet, use little dots to make letters instead of pulling lines through the concrete
After that ordeal, we slept. No really, we took about a 2 hour nap on Saturday. It was glorious. It was after the nap that we decided it was time to do laundry. Enter adventure number 2 of the weekend. The dryer went out on us! The clothes weren’t drying and I had 2 full loads of wet laundry and it’s pouring outside. So, we covered the kitchen in clothes and Stefan went to work fixing the dryer.
After taking it apart and trying to determing if the blower fan was broken or what, he came across a clump…a clump of lint…a clump of lint the size of a basketball. Turns out the previous owners weren’t so good at cleaning the lint trap. Honestly, I’ve never been so happy to see a lint ball in my life. We cleaned that sucker out, put the dryer back together, and voila: dryer like new! Sunday I did 8 loads of laundry. All the sheets, blankets, all the stuff from the apartment that our subletters used. SO MUCH LAUNDRY! I must say, it was an amazingly satisfying day.
In between loads of laundry, Stefan convinced me we absolutely had to clean the bedroom. I was unconvinced. He said I’d feel better. Man was he right!

It doesn’t look amazing or well decorated but it’s clean and functional. We actually assembled the bed which had been propped against the wall for oh, 6 months. We put all the clothes away, hung up every shirt draped over anything in the room, vacuumed(!) and even put the new comforter on the bed. I haven’t slept so well in well 6 months! I get clostophobic from time to time and it had been happening to me more often recently. Stefan took it upon himself to force us to clean up the bedroom for my sanity. I couldn’t be more thankful that he did. I have a better outlook on life just knowing the bedroom floor is picked up. I may just turn into a neat freak if this keeps up!
The weekend can’t be all fun and games and cleaning. Although I was hoping to jump in the pool for a bit, we got a new dart sets to play while we enjoy our time outside. But first we had to finish our work (hah!). We finished sistering beams in the bathroom floor. Now we are ready to start drilling holes for the various wires. We also need to button up some plumbing and do a bit of floor-leveling in the 1/2 bath. It looks good and I’m excited to start checking things off the “Before the Bathroom Floor Goes Down” list.

Vector was once again a good helper for his daddy.

We’ve got a busy few weeks coming up but I’m hoping to have the bathroom floors down by the end of October. That gives us 7 weekends less 2 busy weekend. 5 working weekends to get that floor down. I think that’s do-able. That will give us 5 more working weekends to get things buttoned up for drywall. That even leaves 3 weeks in December to try to schedule blow-in insulation!
Have a good week!

Weekend Update – Labor day Weekend Sept 1,2,&3
We did a bit of yard work this weekend. The big tasks were to get the frame for the concrete pad built, to get the dumpster situtated so it could be hauled off this week, and clean up some brush and trees.
You can see the before and after here. The first photo was taken May 14 and the second Sept 2. The photos don’t do the change justice. It really opened up the yard and the space feels huge. Once we get the shed in and get the big blue tarps out of the yard, we will really have a huge, clean, maintained backyard!

In addition to building the frame, we took down a small tree that was unfortunately situated right in front of where the door to the shed will be. We also pruned and shaped the giant Yew to the right of the shed pad. We had 3 trashcans and 7 bundles of yard waste this week! Tons of work.
I also spent some time pruning the cherry tree. The bows were touching the ground and started turning yellow and brown. It looks much better cut a little higher.

I also spent some time taking pictures of flowers and veggies (and insects) in the backyard.

It’s hard to see in this picture but we also did a bunch of work inside as well. We needed to level the bathroom floor. We accomplished this by blistering 2×6 beams next to the existing beams and bringing them up to level. We used two 4ft levels, a level line, a generously loaned pneumatic framing nailer, and tons of structural screws. We have 6 more boards to do and the half-bath also needs to be leveled. Not too shabby for a days work and we definately needed to do that before we started drilling holes for electric or anything. Next weekend will be all about getting that floor situated with the appropriate electrical, plumbing, Ethernet, etc that needs to run under the floor, we are currently looking for an electrical repair in marietta ga team.
We are also planning on having the concrete pad poured for the shed next weekend. I also have a meeting with a DAR chapter regarding my application. For those of you who don’t know, DAR or Daughters of the American Revolution is a charitable organization for those who can trace their lineage to a soldier in the American Revolution. My patriot is Beriah Bliss. My mother was a member when she was my age and my great grandmother was also a member. It’s a bit of an elite hoity-toity group but they do good work and they are basically an organization devoted to history, patriotism, and charity. Those are 3 things I can get behind.
The weekend after next, my sister and brother-in-law are coming into town! They are going to help us assemble the shed. I’m also planning on some electrical/plumbing work and some porch painting. It would be great if we could get the back deck sealed while they are here. That will mostly depend on the weather I suppose.
Well, that’s the update. We are at a point in the house work where the work is not very photogenic. We are getting behind-the-scenes work done so that we can do all the finishing before and after type stuff later. That’s when the pictures will start getting more exciting!
Have a good short-week!

Garden Update
I realize it’s been a while since I’ve posted about the garden. I haven’t spent much time on it as things are pretty busy in the rest of the house. But flowers bloom and died, weeds grow and grow, and nature changes rather we take time to notice or not.
Here are my previous posts on the garden for reference:
End of June: The flowers were blooming
End of May: Fighting with weeds
Mid May: things are shaping up
Now that September is nearly upon us, fall is just around the corner. The roses aren’t blooming quite as profusely and the gladiolus have come and gone.
The hydrangea has a fresh flush of fall blooms.

The zinnias are doing great! That’s just 1 plant! I’ve got a couple more in pots here and there but it’s been a dry summer and I’m not too good about watering them.

My tomatoes are coming in nicely. I’ve got at least 6 this size!

My garden has done great this year. I’ve got probably 60 cherry tomatoes. I let most of them fall and the squirrels chow down. I have gotten probably 20 large, 8+ inch cucumbers and there are many more on their way. The pepper plant did well producing probably 10 or so hot peppers. The big tomatoes haven’t ripened yet but I’ve got probably 15 or so tomatoes coming 6 of which are HUGE. The squash produced reliably for a couple weeks and then got some kind of squash plant disease. I need to pull it up but it’s acting as a cucumber trellis. I have 3 nice, plump, well-shaped bell peppers that I’m waiting to turn red. Long wait. I’m losing patience! The green beans were a dud. They were bitter and sour no matter how big they were when I picked them. Next year: Sugar Snap Peas. Yummy.

The Hosta tubers I got on super sale and planted much later than is ideal seem to be doing just fine. This one is doing better than the others. I think the tasty clover growing in it distracts the bunnies. I elected to leave it for now and let it take the brunt of the bunny damage.

Last week I got all these super sweet succulents on sale for 75% off at Lowes! Can you believe that?! I got 8 or 9 varieties for less than $5. They were in the cents each price range. I threw some gravel in the bottom of this hot-pink bowl, put a 4″ layer of potting soil, and stuck them in. I grouped them with the succulents I already had on the table on the deck. Quick, easy, cheap and super fun project.

I bought 3 purple butterfly bushes for the side of the porch. I kept waiting for them to get the gutters on the porch before I planted them but the butterfly bushes were none too happy in their pots so into the ground they go. The contractors will just have to work around them. I’ve already seen TONS of butterflies hanging around.

I’ll wait for the gutters for the rest of the foundation plants. I already purchased (tax free weekend) 2 nice boxwoods and some Purple Campanula bells.

That ugly tree’s days are numbered and that number is negative 2. Here she is after I took the clippers to her. Stefan then proceeded to cut her down completely without having to get all scratched up by the branches.

I’m quite pleased with my pruning skills. In all seriousness, I’m quite proud of how much I’ve managed to do garden-wise without spending much time on it. I love the gardening and I’m excited to get things in ship-shape so I can focus on keeping things neat and tidy instead of just keeping things alive. The weather is so nice here in the summer and I’m very much looking forward to spending days outside relaxing in my garden.
Another couple weeks and I’ll need to do some fall yard maintenance. I think I’m going to ask for rose gloves for my birthday. It will certainly make pruning much more pleasant. Rose gloves and a new iPhone.
Only $15.99. My husband is getting off easy!

Aug 25: Operation move…partly
Today we slept in, still recuperating from the work-a-thon last weekend. post here. Then we started moving stuff from the apartment. We managed to sub-let it mostly furnished which has been a huge blessing. We gave them a good deal and in tern we managed to keep our apartment as a storage unit. But September 1 is the great exodus in Boston when all the apartments turn over and we are no exception. I’m so glad to be putting down roots. I’m hoping not to move again for a nice long time, at least I was able to move with help from the Cookson Moving, the number one removal service in Blackpool.

Hopefully we’ll get the rest of the stuff over tomorrow and get all the Stuff situated in the house.
